MOON LIGHT & GOLF | 19-08-2008

MOON LIGHT & GOLF Volvo Cars in Germany have a unique way of deciding who gets to represent the country at the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final in Spain with the national champion having qualified through their ‘Moonshine Golf' series, playing at night by the light of the moon.

First there is the local dealer series, 100 Volvo Masters Amateur qualifying events all over Germany, 80 players in each, half of for whom it is a ‘thank you' to existing Volvo drivers, for the other half, it's members of the media and prospective Volvo customers.

And, whilst the Volvo owners are out on the golf course, their playing package not only includes a Volvo ‘goodie-bag' but also a valet for their car and the prospect of progressing to the Moonshine Series and beyond to Spain.

But the real drama starts under cover of darkness at the three German Volvo Masters Amateur national finals, played in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and München set about deciding which German golfer gets on the plane to Spain and the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final.

"We have been playing Volvo Masters Amateur golf here in Germany for over a decade," explains the project manager Anike Niemann, adding, "It is great fun, very sociable and the ‘moonshine golf' is both quite different and extremely popular.

"Whoever wins through to represent Germany at the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final at Valderrama will go with our best wishes and if there is a sudden-death play-off in the dusk, then perhaps we may have a slight advantage as he or she will be used to playing under the light of the moon," she concluded.

And few will forget just that scenario at Valderrama back in 2002 when German star Bernhard Langer and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie were deep into their play-off for the Volvo Masters itself when the light began to fade, but they shared the title rather than playing under moonlight.
