BIG CHALLENGE | 18-08-2008
Coast to coast, Canada's Volvo Golf Challenge is, quite simply one of the most prodigious parts of the global golf phenomenon that is the Volvo Masters Amateur.
It's the second largest of all the Volvo Masters Amateur golf series after Sweden; Canada's Volvo Golf Challenge attracts an annual entry of almost 10,000 players as far afield as British Columbia in the west to Quebec in the east.
Indeed, it takes 34 local qualifying events to even get to the Canadian regional finals, which this year are to be staged in Vancouver and Toronto just a matter of weeks before the six Canadian qualifiers cross the Atlantic for the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final in Spain.
"The Volvo Golf Challenge is a fantastic cross country marketing campaign for Volvo Cars Canada," says Chris Wilson, project director, adding, "It builds on the strong relationship existing Volvo customers enjoy with golf and also helps embrace the Canadian amateur golfing community and showcase the Volvo fleet of cars to them."
Canada has already won the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final once, scratch golfer Allen McGee taking the title in 2006 and rumour has it the man from Ottawa is making progress towards a record fifth appearance on the world stage in Andalucia.
In addition to the prospect of a trip to the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final, and the chance to compete against the best in the world at the renowned Valderrama, Volvo Golf Challenge entrants can also get lucky with a prize draw and a first prize worth CN$7,000 including a trip for two to a Club Med resort and a set of golf clubs from Nike Golf.
And there are prizes to be won at each of the local qualifying events, with Nike Sumo drivers on offer for the longest drive and other prizes for closest-to-the-pin and what is deemed the ‘perfect shot.'
Models from the entire Volvo Cars fleet are on hand at all 34 events through local and regional dealers for test drives whilst at the two Volvo Golf Challenge Regional Finals, the players are afforded VIP status with courtesy car transport to and from the golf course.
